A part of the municipality of Sinalunga, its name is thought to derive from ‘farnia’ (common oak), a species of oak tree and was located on a high hill above its current location, by no coincidence called Castelvecchio (“old castle”). There are lots of olive groves and vineyards here and the settlement in Farnetella dates back to the Middle Ages and was the home of a branch of the Cacciaconti family. It is laid out like a typical medieval village and the castle is still intact with traces of the defensive walls and a semi-circular tower.
